To insert an object, click Object on the Insert tab. Insert a new object To create a new file that is inserted into your Word document or email message: • In the Object dialog box, click the Create New tab, and then select an option from the Object type list. The default program for that file type opens, where you can enter any text or data you want. When you close the program, any added content or changes appear in your Word document or email message. • If you want the new file to appear as a clickable icon, rather than the first page of your new file, select Display as icon. If this check box is selected, you can choose a different icon by clicking Change Icon. Tips: • The information in the Result section changes based on the selected object type and whether Display as icon is selected. Use this information to help you determine what you want to insert and how you want it to appear. • To edit the information in your inserted object, double-click the object. Link or embed an existing file To link or embed an object that's already been created: • In the Object dialog box, select the Create from File tab, and then click Browse to find the file you want to insert. • To link to the source file, rather than embedding it into your Word document or email message, select Link to file. • If you want the inserted file to appear as a clickable icon, rather than the first page of the file, select Display as icon. The Embedded OpenType File Format (EOT) was developed by Microsoft to enable TrueType and OpenType fonts to be linked to web pages for. User Agents must validate that the page using the embedded font is within the list of URLs in the RootString from which the embedded font object may be. If this check box is selected, you can choose a different icon by clicking Change Icon. Tip: The information in the Result section changes based on whether Link to file and Display as icon are selected. Use this information to help you determine what you want to insert and how you want it to appear. Embedded objects vs. Linked objects Embedded objects become part of the Word file or email message and, after they are inserted, they are no longer connected to any source file. Linked objects can be updated if the source file is modified. Linked data is stored in the source file. The Word file or email message (the destination file) stores only the location of the source file, and it displays a representation of the linked data. Use linked objects if file size is a consideration. ||||||| OLE Embedded Components & Containers Part 1 Program examples compiled using Visual C++ 6.0 compiler on Windows XP Pro machine with Service Pack 2. You'll learn how an embedded component talks to its container. This is the needed knowledge in order to use ActiveX controls, in-place activation (Visual Editing), and linking, all of which are described in Adam Denning's ActiveX Controls Inside Out (Microsoft Press, 1997), Kraig Brockschmidt's Inside OLE, 2d ed. (Microsoft Press, 1995), and other books. You'll get started with a Microsoft Foundation Class mini-server, an out-of-process OLE component program that supports in-place activation but can't run as a stand-alone program. Running this component will give you a good idea of what OLE looks like to the user, in case you don't know already. You'll also see the extensive MFC support for this kind of application. If you work at only the top MFC level, however, you won't appreciate or understand the underlying OLE mechanisms. For that, you'll have to dig deeper. Shepherd and Wingo's MFC Internals (Addison-Wesley, 1996) provides extensive coverage of the internal workings of MFC's OLE Document support. Next you'll build a container program that uses the familiar parts of the MFC library but supports embedded OLE objects that can be edited in their own windows. This container can, of course, run your MFC mini-server, but you'll really start to learn OLE when you build a mini-server from scratch and watch the interactions between it and the container. Embedding vs. In-Place Activation (Visual Editing) Visual Editing is Microsoft's name for in-place activation. A component that supports in-place activation also supports embedding. Both in-place activation and embedding store their data in a container's document, and the container can activate both. An in-place-capable component can run inside the container application's main window, taking over the container's menu and toolbar, and it can run in its own top-level window if necessary. An embedded component can run only in its own window, and that window has a special menu that does not include file commands. Figure 1 shows a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet in-place activated inside a Microsoft Word document. Notice the Excel menus and toolbars. Some container applications support only embedded components; others support both in-place and embedded components. Usually, an in-place container program allows the user to activate in-place components either in place or in their own windows. You should be getting the idea that embedding is a subset of in-place activation. This is true not only at the user level but also at the OLE implementation level. Embedding relies on two key interfaces, IOleObject and IOleClientSite, which are used for in-place activation as well. Figure 1: An Excel spreadsheet activated inside a Word document. Mini-Servers vs. Full Servers (Components): Linking Mini-Servers vs. Full Servers A mini-server can't be run as a stand-alone program; it depends on a container application to launch it. It can't do its own file I/O but depends on the container's files. A full server, on the other hand, can be run both as a stand-alone program and from a container. When it's running as a stand-alone program, it can read and write its own files, which mean that it supports OLE linking. With embedding, the container document contains all the data that the component needs; with linking, the container contains only the name of a file that the component must open. The Dark Side of Visual Editing We're really enthusiastic about the COM architecture, and we truly believe that ActiveX Controls will take over the programming world. We're not so sure about Visual Editing, though, and we aren't alone. From our cumulative experience meeting developers around the world, we've learned that few developers are writing applications that fit the 'objects embedded in a document' model. From our programming experiences, we've learned that it is tricky for containers and components to coordinate the size and scale of embedded objects. From our 'user' experience, we've learned that in-place activation can be slow and awkward, although the situation is improving with faster computers. If you don't believe us, try embedding an Excel worksheet in a Word document, as shown in Figure 28-1. Resize the worksheet in both the active mode and the non-active mode. Notice that the two sizes don't track and that processing is slow. Consider the need for drawing graphics. Older versions of Microsoft PowerPoint used an in-place component named Microsoft Draw. The idea was that other applications could use this component for all their graphics needs. Well, it didn't work out that way, and PowerPoint now has its own built-in drawing code. If you have old PowerPoint files with Microsoft Draw objects, you'll have a hard time converting them. Now consider printing. Let's say you receive a Word document over the Internet from Singapore, and that document contains the metafiles for some embedded objects. You don't have the objects' component programs, however. You print the document on your trusty 1200-dpi color laser printer, and the metafiles print with it. Embedded object metafiles can be rendered for a specific printer, but it's doubtful that the person in Singapore used your printer driver when creating the document. The result is less-than-optimal output with incorrect line breaks. We do believe, however, that the OLE embedding technology has a lot of potential. Playing sounds and movies is cool, and storing objects in a database is interesting. What you learn in this module will help you think of new uses for this technology. Windows Metafiles and Embedded Objects You're going to need a little more Windows theory before you can understand how in-place and embedded components draw in their clients' windows. We've avoided metafiles up to this point because we haven't needed them, but they've always been an integral part of Windows. Think of a metafile as a cassette tape for GDI instructions. To use a cassette, you need a player/recorder, and that's what the metafile device context (DC) is. If you specify a filename when you create the metafile DC, your metafile will be saved on disk; otherwise, it's saved in memory and you get a handle. In the world of OLE embedding, components create metafiles and containers play them. Here's some component code that creates a metafile containing some text and a rectangle: CMetaFileDC dcm; // MFC class for metafile DC VERIFY(dcm.Create()); dcm.SetMapMode(MM_ANISOTROPIC); dcm.SetWindowOrg(0, 0); dcm.SetWindowExt(5000, -5000); // drawing code dcm.Rectangle(CRect(500, -1000, 1500, -2000)); dcm.TextOut(0, 0, m_strText); HMETAFILE hMF = dcm.Close(); ASSERT(hMF!= NULL); It's possible to create a metafile that uses a fixed mapping mode such as MM_LOENGLISH, but with OLE we'll always use the MM_ANISOTROPIC mode, which is not fixed. The metafile contains a SetWindowExt() call to set the x and y extents of the window, and the program that plays the metafile calls SetViewportExt() to set the extents of the viewport. Here's some code that you might put inside your container view's OnDraw() function: pDC->SetMapMode(MM_HIMETRIC); pDC->SetViewportExt(5000, 5000); pDC->PlayMetafile(hMF); What's supposed to show up on the screen is a rectangle 1-by-1-cm square because the component assumes the MM_HIMETRIC mapping mode. It will be 1-by-1 cm as long as the viewport extent matches the window extent. If the container sets the viewport extent to (5000, 10000) instead, the rectangle will be stretched vertically but the text will be the same size because it's drawn with the non-scalable system font. If the container decided to use a mapping mode other than MM_HIMETRIC, it could adjust the viewport extent to retain the 1-by-1-cm size. To reiterate, the component sets the window extent to the assumed size of the viewable area and draws inside that box. If the component uses a negative y extent, the drawing code works just as it does in MM_HIMETRIC mapping mode. The container somehow gets the component's extent size and attempts to draw the metafile in an area with those HIMETRIC dimensions. Why are we bothering with metafiles? Because the container needs to draw something in the component's rectangle, even if the component program isn't running. The component creates the metafile and hands it off in a data object to the in-process OLE handler module on the container side of the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) link. The handler then caches the metafile and plays it on demand and also transfers it to and from the container's storage. When a component is in-place active, however, its view code is drawing directly in a window that's managed by the container. The MFC OLE Architecture for Component Programs We're not going into too many details here, just enough to allow you to understand the new files in the next example. You need to know about three new MFC base classes: COleIPFrameWnd, COleServerDoc, and COleServerItem. When you use AppWizard to generate an OLE component, AppWizard generates a class derived from each of the base classes, in addition to an application class, a main frame class, and a view class. The COleIPFrameWnd class is rather like CFrameWnd. It's your application's main frame window, which contains the view. It has a menu associated with it, IDR_SRVR_INPLACE, which will be merged into the container program's menu. When your component program is running in place, it's using the in-place frame, and when it's running stand-alone or embedded, it's using the regular frame, which is an object of a class derived from CFrameWnd. The embedded menu is IDR_SRVR_EMBEDDED, and the stand-alone menu is IDR_MAINFRAME. The COleServerDoc class is a replacement for CDocument. It contains added features that support OLE connections to the container. The COleServerItem class works with the COleServerDoc class. If components never supported OLE linking, the functionality of the two classes could be combined into one class. Because stand-alone component programs do support linking, the MFC architecture dictates that both classes be present in all components. You'll see in the EX28C example that we can make our own simple mini-server without this division. Together, the COleServerItem class and the COleServerDoc class implement a whole series of OLE interfaces, including IOleObject, IDataObject, IPersistStorage, and IOleInPlaceActiveObject. These classes make calls to the container, using interface pointers that the container passes to them. The important things to know, however, are that your derived CView class draws in the component's in-place-active window and that the derived COleServerItem class draws in the metafile on command from the container. The EX32A Project Example: An MFC In-Place-Activated Mini-Server You don't need much OLE theory to build an MFC mini-server. This example is a good place to start, though, because you'll get an idea of how containers and components interact. This component isn't too sophisticated. It simply draws some text and graphics in a window. The text is stored in the document, and there's a dialog for updating it. Here are the steps for creating the program from scratch: Run AppWizard to create the EX32A project in the ex32a directory or wherever you have designated your project directory. Figure 2: EX32A – Visual C++ new project dialog. Select Single document interface. Figure 3: EX32A – AppWizard step 1 of 6. Figure 4: EX32A – AppWizard step 2 of 6. Why (and Where to) Shop Outside of the Steam Store The click-and-done purchase process on Steam is, obviously, very, very convenient, but it doesn’t always yield the best prices. While Steam is well known for their huge Summer and Winter sales (as well as a spattering of deeply discounted games here or there throughout the year), the vast majority of games on Steam sit at full retail for most of the year. In fact, if you buy a game from outside Steam, you can often import the game into your Steam library, and it’ll appear exactly as if you’d bought them through Steam in the first place—complete with play time and progress, Steam achievements, and more. So, if you’re willing to venture outside the Steam marketplace and do a little comparison shopping you can end up saving quite a bit of money, with no downside to you. Note: Not all games can be imported into Steam, but that doesn’t mean you can’t use your Steam library interface to manage even those titles. If you find yourself with an unrecognized (or very old) game title that you still wish to use Steam to manage, check out. Warning: Due to the popularity of Steam, there are a lot of sketchy sites trafficking fake Steam Keys. We do not recommend searching Google for “Steam Keys” and picking the cheapest reseller you can find. Reseller experiences range from “I saved a few bucks and nothing awful happened” to “My computer is now infected with ransomware”. If you’re curious about the world of key resellers, dives into the issue. The most bulletproof shopping strategy is to buy only from firmly established organizations like,,. You can also get Steam-compatible keys from popular bundles like. If you’ve heard of the store before, it’s probably a safe bet. If you want to comparison shop and/or get alerts when prices fall across Steam and related game sale sites, we’d recommend checking out, which can track discounts and notify you when a game you want is on sale, where, and if it’s compatible with Steam importing. How to Add a Third Party Game Code to Steam In order to add games purchased through a third party to your Steam account, you’ll need the activation code from the third party retailer. You can either redeem codes on the Steam website or via the Steam desktop application. To redeem a code in the Steam application, open Steam on your computer and from the top navigation bar, select “Games” and then “Activate a Product on Steam” to start the product activation wizard. To redeem a code via the Steam website instead, head to the and sign in with your Steam account. Enter the product key here and go through the wizard. The website works basically the same as the Activate a Product on Steam option in the Steam client, but it can be used even if you don’t have Steam installed on your current device. You could even access this website from your phone. On the first page of the wizard, you’ll be prompted to get your code ready, click “Next” when you’re ready. On the next screen agree to the terms of service by clicking “I Agree”. On the next page of the activation wizard, enter your product code in the slot and click “Next”. Do note that the name given to the activation codes is rarely “Steam Key” when you’re buying from a different retailer and it may be labeled “Digital Activation Code”, “Product Code”, or some variation there of. The important part is that the retailer you purchase from notes that the key can be redeemed on Steam and that it is formatted like the examples seen below. On the last screen, you’ll see a confirmation of the game title as well as a button that allows you to print a receipt of the game activation transaction. The only difference between what you see on the screen and what is printed out is that the printout includes your Steam username and a confirmation code in addition to the game title. Click finish when you’re done reviewing and/or printing the information on the final screen. After you exit the activation wizard, you’ll see the game you just activated in your library, like so: Simply click on the “Install” button, like you would any other Steam game, to download the game and get started playing it. May 30, 2013 This video tutorial is going to show you how to activate games on Steam. Don't forget to check out our site for more free how-to videos. Eliminating the coaxial cable means you can use almost any router with FiOS internet instead of the one they force you to rent from them. Simply have Verizon turn the FiOS ONT Ethernet port on. This will allow you to have internet without coaxial in your house. So you may be asking; “What’s an ONT?” ONT stands for “Optical Network Terminal” (ONT). It’s that bulky box the Verizon technician installs for FiOS Internet, TV, and phone. This device takes the fiber optic signals coming from the Verizon backbone and translates them for use with devices in your house. If an ONT isn’t already in your house, a Verizon technician will come and install one on your premises upon becoming a Verizon FiOS subscriber. Typically, the technician sets up the ONT to have a Coax output. The Coax cable is then split to a Verizon FiOS router for FiOS i ernet, and various Set Top Boxes for FiOS TV. While this is fine for Cable TV subscribers, isn’t ideal for customers like myself. What would be ideal is having Ethernet come from the FiOS ONT instead of Coax. Having the Coax output from the ONT requires usage of a MoCA Wide Area Network (WAN) bridge. Stands for Multimedia over Cable, and the Router supplied by FiOS acts as a MoCA bridge, translating the signal to Ethernet for use by devices on your network. FiOS ONT Ethernet Port Did you know that the ONT Verizon installs has an Ethernet output? Since Verizon wants everyone to purchase Cable TV from them, their default residential install has Coax coming from the ONT. However, by looking at the picture below, it appears the FiOS ONT Ethernet port can just as easily supply an internet connection instead of Coax. FiOS ONT Ethernet port The FiOS ONT Ethernet port is turned off by default. Even for customers, Verizon will still run Coax to their router and possibly charge a rental fee on the device. I’ve never heard of a Verizon technician offering to turn on the ONT Ethernet port for customers ditching the TV portion of their subscription. The picture is the part of the ONT that is accessible by the customer. However, as the Ethernet port is turned off, simply plugging in a Cat5 cable will not provide you with access to the Internet. You will need to contact customer support and have them turn off the MoCA output, and enable the ONT Ethernet port. I recommend leaving the existing Coax hooked up to your Verizon router while running an Ethernet cable from the ONT to your Verizon Router’s WAN port prior to calling support. They may schedule a time for the switch to take place. With both cables plugged in, there should not be any noticeable delay in service when the ONT switches from MoCA to Ethernet. Don’t Take No for an Answer If the support representative refuses, or doesn’t understand what you are talking about, simply request to speak to a supervisor. They should escalate the call to the next level of support. Since this functionality is supported by Verizon, someone should eventually honor your request. Once you see the Ethernet output from the ONT is active, you are free to switch out the Verizon router with the router of your choice. This may be a great opportunity to wire your house for Ethernet, as you can use the existing Coax runs to pull the cables through. You may even want to have your main router near the ONT, thus running Ethernet lines from the router to various rooms in the house. This will allow the installation ofat various points in the house, ensuring that there is Wi-Fi coverage in every room. Turning off MoCA is not recommended if you are still provided with Cable TV from Verizon. While their set-top boxes support an Ethernet connection, the video will not come through properly. Using Ethernet from an ONT is only recommended for customers. Also depending on the age of you ONT, the Ethernet output may be limited to 100 Mbps. If Verizon ever decides to give customers high speeds at reasonable prices, then customers with these older ONTs may want to use the MoCA connection. This article is enormously helpful, I had no idea that I needed to take these sorts of things into account for a simple upgrade. Please forgive my ignorant question, but I’m still a little confused; I’ve had Fios for quite a long time now (upwards of 10 years, I think) and recently purchased a new wireless modem, because the old non-wireless modem which came with the Fios setup isupwards of 10 years old. I see from this article that I’ll need to make some adjustments with my ONT connection if I want to keep the new modem, but I also get my television and phone service from Verizon, so my question is, can I call them to turn on the ONT port and still keep my television and phone service, or will there be interference? Thanks for mentioning. I was on the phone with tech support for literally over 2 hours and no bueno on the Airport by itself. Ironically, when I spoke with customer support again, it was the non-technical guy that told me about it, and months prior he looked into that reoccurring issue with tech support and according to him he did a lot of digging with them to determine to verify this issue and if there was any resolution. I live in the NYC area, if that makes a difference. Regardless, with what I am saving now ($100/month), I don’t mind a 1-time costand that 2-hour call still haunts me. Dennis, I see by this thread that this issue has been around for a while. I just wanted wanted to let you know what my experience was this past Monday, 9/Oct./2017 with Verizon. I went from their standard Voice, Internet 75/75, and TV package to internet only and upgraded to their new 1 Gig internet package because of a corporate dispute between Verizon and our local network TV stations. I was tired of being in the middle of things like that. Anyway, they tried to pressure me into staying with them as a “bundle” customer and when I insisted on talking with a supervisor they gave me what I wanted for a great price. I already had the Fios Quantum Gateway router/cable modem with CAT5e from my older ONT to the router, I also had the coax cable from the ONT to the gateway. I had both ports operational when this equipment was installed about 2 years ago. At that time the technician explained to me that the coax for the TV, guide, and on demand stuff etc. And I understood how all that operated. When I converted to the 1 Gig internet only service they needed to install a new ONT and then change some switches at their “bridge” equipment on the road. The technician, on his own, then shut down the coax port on the new ONT and just turned on the ethernet port. I had about 850 meg. At the router but the WiFi was only around 60 meg. Download and 160 upload speed. I had purchased a Verizon Quantum WiFi range extender about a month ago for the second floor of our home. What I did not realize is that it was not a repeater type, that it actually received the signal from the Gateway on the main floor through the coax and then converted that to Wifi for the 2nd floor. When I removed the cable from the main floor router it pretty much eliminated our WiFi up stairs. My point to this long history is that, Verizon is now turning the coax port switch at the ONT off when customers go to internet only, this is straight from the tech., so if the homeowner decides to go back to a bundled voice, internet, TV package they have to call and schedule a service tech at $150 to turn the coax cable port back on! The current Fios Quantum Gateway router/cable modem is great for ethernet speeds but is seriously lacking when it comes to WiFi signal strength and speed. Anyone going with an internet only package from them should also plan on purchasing a much better third party router for superior WiFi performance. I have FiOS phone and internet only, no TV. With the intention of replacing my Verizon Quantum router with an Asus RT-AC68U, I ran a Cat6 cable from my ONT into my house, to the spot where Verizon’s router is. Then I called Verizon last night to turn on the Ethernet output of the ONT and turn off MoCA. I confirmed with the lights on the ONT that Ethernet was active and MoCA was dead. As soon as I got off the phone with the tech I noticed my internet speed was down to close to zero. Called Verizon again, and a different phone tech advised me that my Ethernet cable was too long. (It was about 30 feet long.) So I shortened it, plugged it in, rebooted the Verizon router, and ran a speed test. Very bad speeds once again. However, I then ran a speed test with my laptop plugged directly into a LAN port of the Verizon router and got blazing fast speeds (seemingly faster than the 75/75 I pay for). WiFi speed still sucks. When I woke up this morning WiFi didn’t work at all. Another reboot, another hardwired speed test that returned 81/55. What’s going on? Did I just happen to do this at the moment my Verizon Quantum router bit the dust? Am I bad at terminating a Cat6 cable? (I tested it with a LAN tester.) My new Asus RT-AC68U router should be delivered today, and I’m eager to get back online and get the speed I’m paying for. Or if I call Verizon again is yet another first-level phone tech going to tell me I caused the problem by using an Ethernet cable that’s too long? (It’s about 15-16 feet long right now.) I’m baffled and frustrated. The router is in exactly the same place. Hard-wired connection to my router results in blazing speeds. The only changes are my own newly-installed Ethernet cable (which has a terminator on one end that I installed, making me a little nervous), and Verizon switching the ONT from MoCA to Ethernet. I’m starting to thing maybe I’m doing this at the exact moment the Verizon router is biting the dust. But I know very little about networking and don’t want to screw something up before switching routers. Want to make sure the Verizon one works okay before changing out to an Asus. I just got Fios 100/100 bundle Tv, Home phone and Internet. I was told I need to have a set-tv box on every tv. ( i have 7 ). I have a ONT outside of garage with fiber coming in, and coax ran in to tech panel, there is also a ethernet port on ONT. Where my coax/tv connections are which then run thru two. 4 way spilters then into Frontiers a G1100 -router. I want to try and get rid of the cable set-tv boxes on 3 of my tvs. How can i do that. I heard of a product HD homerun prime.a moca product. Which is basically a tunner in it. Will this allow me to have cable tv with out a cable tv-box? Also i want to hard wire my sons XBOX one to the LAN. Can i accomplish that with this type of product. I have coax and cat 5 lines ran throught out my house at each tv location. If also have smart tvs can i also hook them up via cat 5? If so what is the benefit? That is a scam by cable companies to force you to rent a cable box. I’m pretty sure it’s even illegal for them to say that, but you can find out with the FCC. You are NOT required to use a set top box. The only real catch here is that you will only be able to access local, unencrypted channels. Unless of course, like me, you decide to get Tivo at which point you would only need to rent one cable card($4.99 a month) and connect your other TV’s with Tivo minis. This package works best because you only have to rent that one cable card and connect all of your TV’s for one rental fee. Also keep in mind that most technicians won’t install coax wiring unless you plan to use a box, in which case simply order each box, let them install the wiring, and return the boxes. Sharing my experience, hopefully it may shed some light on issues and help someone. I was running a TP-Link Archer AC2600 on Verizon DSL. Today, Verizon installed Phone/Internet FIOS at my residence. I got Verizon to give me a router (free). The technician connected the ONT Ethernet port, Verizon router and activated the account. Everything worked. I searched the web for how to use your own router with FIOS ONT Ethernet. Each post seemed to “some how I got it to work”, so I decided to logically test the steps. I powered off the FIOS Box (clearing everything). I cloned Verizon MAC and configured my router with 192.168.1.1. The logic is to start with a twin. I powered up the FIOS Box. I powered up “my” router. I used the router “auto detect” to establish the connection without any credential. The lingering question, “Does Verizon authenticate the connection using the MAC?” b. I logged into the router and reset the MAC to the router’s own MAC. I used the router “auto detect” to establish the connection without any credential. It didn’t seem like Verizon was using the MAC. Several people told me that you have to use 192.168.1.1 on the router. I tested the IP address scope on the router by changing the scope to another range (i.e. From my experience: (a) you do not need to clone Verizon’s MAC address and (b) you do not need to use 192.168.1.1. It seemed to be end-to-end connection. Use “Auto Detect” to let your router resolve connection issue with Verizon FIOS. Now, I have an almost new (used 1 hour – lol) Verizon router. If the ONT’s connections to the router was switched to Ethernet should the “Ethernet” light be on? It’s not, but Verizn said it is switched to Ethernet. I just had Fios installed and was able to successfully connect to the internet with my own router (linksis e2500 v3) and now it’s not working. I have an Ethernet cable sticking out of my wall and I just connected that to the linksis router. Verizon tech support says I need to use their router because mine may not support the network. If this is true then fine, but I don’t want to be paying an extra $10/month if I don’t have to. Also, if I borrowed a fios router from someone to just test out of it’d work connecting to the Ethernet, would that work? I don’t want to get a Verizon router and not have it work because I’m sure they’d figure out a way to still charge me. I had an issue with the getting the Ethernet port activated. The fist lady I spoke with said I HAD to upgrade to the 100/100 (i have the 50/50) in order to get the Ethernet port activated She also said her supervisor was in a meeting when I asked to talk to them. That is the first time I ever heard that before. She then transferred me to customer server. This guy was only saying what he was reading (and I’m assuming what she said to him). But the 3rd guy I talked to was able to hook me up in less than 7 min. The big thing is with them is to NEVER EVER take no for an answer. Marie, This post is a bit in the tech weeds. I’d likely be equally out of my depth in you area of expertise, so I completely understand. In most cases once you call them and ask them to switch over to Ethernet, your router should be able to get the IP address. However, with all things IT, there are exceptions. If that were to happen, you we need to know some things about the basics of configuring a router to get it straightened out. I only recommend going through with this if you are familiar with how to adjust your router configuration. Obviously, this is a tech site. It’s why I came here to try to understand the insulting letter from Verizon that I just received. I wanted to arm myself before calling them to protest. Butthis is so tech heavy, I can’t quite grasp what my options are:( I have Fios, internet, two cell phones and a home phone bundled up with them @ ~$300 month. I don’t know what my options even are. I can’t really call their bluff because options are limited where I live. And also, because I’d have to decipher them:P •. When you say router would that include a cheap n300 Belk in? I’m waiting for frontier who’s been a nightmare since they took over for Verizon. Our red band gateway went out and they’re sending us a new one but in the meantime can I just use this cheap belkin n300 router in place? I have ethernet port in wall. I can direct connect from wall to Playstation and it works but not my xbox one for some reason. I plugged in the router and in its setup it said to contact frontier. Is this where I need to ask them to break ohcp lease or something so that the new router can communicate with the box outside? Great document! Now I understand why Verizon use ONT coax instead of Ethernet so they can sell/rent the modem. Frontier recently bought FiOS business in our area and Frontier does not support FiOS well. I current have FiOS-G1100 and the technical support team from Frontier does not know what that is??? My FiOS-G1100 is poor in WiFi signal, What do you recommend for a replacement one or a WiFi extender? Since I also TV customer therefore turning off MoCA is not recommended like you mention above. I called Verizon and got somebody who knew right away what I wanted done – had the switch-over to the Ethernet port done in less than 5 minutes! I’ve got 5 static IPs and need 4 of them routed directly to my internal LAN so my servers see the public IPs, not through the NAT. The service rep wasn’t sure how to do that, so she got the network guy who’d done the switch-over on the line, and now I’ve got a plan – put one router/switch I own into bridge mode to pass the public IPs to my servers, and use another one I own to do the NAT/firewall functionality for my internal network – and I get to return the $7/month Verizon router when I’m done. It was actually a pleasant and constructive phone call, something that’s a rarity in dealing with “service” industries. I called Verizon today. I had rented the Verizon MCOA router for the last year – I wanted to return theirs and use my own. Verizon stated they required a $99 charge to have a tech come to my house and enable to ONT ethernet port. No exceptions. I asked if I could simply upgrade to 150 mpbs internet service. (I had assumed my old ONT was 10/100 and the faster service would require a new ONT.) Sure, it’s $30/month more. But (as I suspected) this speed requires a new ONT box. And the cost to install that box would be $150. No exceptions. I asked “If I were a new customer, wouldn’t any equipment install be free? I’m trying to spend more on an upgraded service.” “Yes sir, but we’re not talking about new customer pricing. You are under contract.” So it’s not worth it. (Almost like they wanted to make it that way) •. I had fios interntet installed and didn’t request TV or phone service. The tech ran ethernet from the ONT to a Fios Quantum Gateway Router G1100. The wireless signal wasn’t too great so I connected an old AirPort Extreme to one of the G1100’s ethernet outputs and had 2 networks. I realized that the AirPort extreme network tended to work better and since I didn’t have to worry about a coax input I figured I’d just plug the ethernet from the ONT directly into the AirPort extreme. I’d give back the G1100 and save 10 bucks a month. Problem is – it won’t work unless I use the G1100 as a type of bridge. Might anyone know why that is and what I can do to avoid the monthly rental fee for a modem/router I don’t really want. I see Verizon currently has a deal for internet only where it’s $44.99 month for year 1. For year 2 with a 2-yr. OR $50 per month and they add local TV and HBO (free) for 1 year with no contract. After the year is over, you can probably negotiate for them to keep you. The problem is I guess going with option 2 though you’d be stuck with their modem and the $10 modem rental fee to get the HBO along with the inability to avoid the COAX output from the ONT? What do you think is the way to go? Hi, I was wondering do you have an idea what OMI on my ONT means? I asked for Verizon to upgrade my internet service from 50 BMPs over 50 BMPs to 100 over 100. I have one of the older ONT’s, 612 model. After I try to activate my upgrade, it took out my internet and TV. When I went outside to look at my Ont, it showed it was working but did not have any communication. The next thing I noticed was my OMI light was off, saying I had no OMI channel. Then there was the Ethernet light and the coaxial light, which was also on off. It says that it means they have been disabled. I call Verizon and they are telling me the order was not going through. They said my ONT was not capable of the 100 BMPs, that they would have to send a Tech or I would have to cancel my order and go back to my old speed. I think I have one problem here, the way you described it, you went with coax on install day, then ran your own Cat cable to the ONT later and called tech support to switch the ONT from MOCA to Ethernet. This is not very handy if they installed the ONT outside. I’m not sure if that’s the standard practice now but if they were putting it outside I’d want the tech to put in the CAT cable because maybe it would be difficult to do afterwards (they might run a pcv pipe through the wall containing the cable and sealed it with something) •. * See Cardholder Agreement for details. Eyevine A FORLORN shop facing a dusty car park in one of the poorest parts of Phoenix, Arizona, is an inauspicious place to start a closely watched experiment in global retailing. Yet this is where Tesco, Britain's biggest supermarket group, will seek to establish its beachhead in the world's richest grocery market. Later this year Tesco will open at least 21 stores in this arid city and plenty more—it will not say how many—in Las Vegas, San Diego and Los Angeles. It plans to pepper some of America's fastest-growing states with Fresh & Easy local groceries at a rate of three a week. Tesco has identified as many as 100 sites to begin its £250m a year ($500m) campaign. Rumour has it that a new warehouse just east of Los Angeles could alone supply some 400 stores. Related items • Feb 7th 2008 That is one reason why Tesco has to venture abroad. Another became clear this week, when the company reported how sales growth at its British stores slowed sharply in the first quarter, because of subdued consumer spending and increased competition. It shares fell by almost 5% on the news. But this was compensated for by international sales, which grew by 25%. Tesco is expanding in places like eastern Europe and China, where it tailors supermarkets to local conditions. In America it is trying something completely different. The operation is veiled in secrecy and furtiveness—Tesco is anxious not to tip its hand to competitors. When it tested the layout of a mock store in Santa Monica, it did so hidden from view in a warehouse. It stocked the shelves with food shipped in from America's East Coast and people were told it was just a film set. The secrecy and the speed with which Tesco is expected to open its new stores points to the risks. If Tesco gambles small and wins, competitors will have time to copy it before it reaches critical mass. Placing a big bet is more dangerous, but it may be the best way to exploit a model that can be scaled up rapidly into thousands of stores across a market that rewards innovation like no other. “In retailing there aren't huge barriers to entry,” says Sir Terry Leahy, Tesco's chief executive. “That's one of the reasons you can't hang around and trial this thing. You have to launch and go.” Some people have already decided to bet on Tesco's success. Last year Warren Buffett, one of America's most successful investors, revealed that his Berkshire Hathaway company had bought almost 3% of Tesco to become one of its largest shareholders. Mr Buffett admires careful planning and Tesco has done plenty of that. Into their cupboards The company has spent years gathering detailed information on every aspect of American life. Most retailers would think they had done their homework after the usual focus groups and surveys, but Tesco went much further. Researchers, including a small cohort of top executives, spent two weeks living with 60 American families. They poked around in their kitchen cupboards, watched them cook and followed them as they shopped. “They'd been studying the city for about a year before they came to us,” says Scott Motley, who works for the city of Phoenix, which with the Greater Phoenix Economic Council helped Tesco find places to put stores. Even the stores seem part of a grander plan to keep gathering data. Take the patchwork of districts where Tesco plans to build some of the first. In central Phoenix it has chosen some of the poorest parts of town. Families living within a mile of one store have a median annual income of just $37,500 (against about $44,000 for America as a whole). In nearby Chandler, a middle-class area, it will be building its stores within reach of the city's richest inhabitants. There, median incomes run to about $93,000. This torrent of comparative data is central to the plan: Tesco is setting out to change the way Americans shop and eat. As in most retail markets, American stores are splitting into those that sell luxury goods and those that sell cheap ones. Both Whole Foods Market (luxury) and Wal-Mart (cheap) are among America's fastest-growing stores (although they have slowed down a bit recently). Retailers catering to the mid-market such as Kroger, Safeway and Albertson, three of America's biggest grocers, have been squeezed. They come under pressure to cut prices and margins when Wal-Mart moves into the area. And they are simultaneously pressed to invest in swanky wood-effect polished floors and sumptuous fresh-produce displays to stop their richer customers decamping for posher places. Social shoppers Tesco's offering in America will swim against this tide. It is aiming Fresh & Easy squarely at the middle market. The firm is hoping to repeat its success in attracting shoppers from all the main social groups in Britain, where social class until recently played at least as big a role in determining where people shopped as price and convenience did. Tesco will also be a pioneer in two other important ways: the size of its stores and their range of goods. Most Fresh & Easy outlets will be relatively small, at about 10,000 square feet. Although about the same sales-floor size as the average Walgreen's, a chain of drugstores, most food retailers in America are either much bigger (six Fresh & Easy's would fit into a typical supermarket and ten into the average Wal-Mart), or much smaller (each is about three times the size of a 7-Eleven convenience store). Does size matter? In America's lightly regulated supermarket industry, most shoppers in all but the deepest backwoods live just a few minutes' drive from a large supermarket. The chances are the store has acres of parking, is open all night and has a good selection of whatever you might need: prescription medicines, dog food and piping-hot meals that have been cooked in the store. Convenience, however, has many dimensions. Tesco is betting that there is demand for smaller stores closer to home with fewer products, making it easier to find things. People in too much of a rush to stop at a supermarket use tiny outlets such as 7-Eleven, of which there are close to 1,200 in California alone. But their range is limited. Retail Forward, an American consultancy, reckons nearly 40% of convenience sales come from cigarettes and tobacco, followed closely by beer and wine. As for nutrition, most offer little more than snacks and frozen pizza. “The typical American convenience-store consumer would be Homer Simpson,” says Ira Kalish, a retailing expert at Deloitte, an accounting firm. “No one has done convenience and quality food together.” As for products, Tesco's second innovation will be a range of preservative-free “ready meals” that are familiar to British consumers yet barely exist in large parts of America. “There's a big hole in the American market,” says Rajiv Lal, of Harvard Business School. “American supermarkets have not been innovative with prepared foods. You can't eat them more than three days in the week without eating the same stuff. But I suspect there are people in Britain who live off prepared meals from Marks & Spencer for three weeks on end.” So why have British supermarkets led America's in easy meals? Generals like to say that amateurs study tactics and professionals study logistics. The same is true for retailing. In trying to compete with discount retailers such as Wal-Mart and Costco in a large country with good roads and cheap land that lends itself to big-box retailing, America's supermarkets have concentrated mainly on trying to take costs out of their supply chains. Labour is also cheaper in America. This has encouraged supermarkets to make two sorts of food: that which lasts long because it has been dried, canned, frozen or otherwise preserved, and that which is prepared from raw ingredients on site. Sandwiches to ready meals British supermarkets, in contrast, operate on a small, crowded island with restrictive planning laws. Whereas American stores are good at moving goods hundreds of miles and keeping them cheap, British retailers specialise in regular, frequent deliveries to heaving city-centre stores. Their supply chains are more sophisticated because they have to be. Stores can be so small that they have to switch from selling sandwiches at lunchtime to selling ready-made suppers in the afternoon. Expensive labour and a shortage of space have encouraged British retailers to seek economies of scale from centralised food preparation. Rather than cooking on site, they make a wide range of meals that can last for a couple of days. These are not just staples such as macaroni cheese or lasagne. A typical London supermarket now stocks more than 50 different meals, including treats such as organic beef in wine, Keralan prawn curry and Asian noodles with vegetables. Although some British supermarkets have done a better job at seizing the top of the market and others the bottom, none has surpassed Tesco at concocting a wide enough range of meals to suit every taste. Once, Tesco was stuck downmarket selling cheap fodder to working-class mums. Now its market share is almost as large as the combined share of its two closest rivals: Asda, which is owned by Wal-Mart, and J. Tesco's rise is at least partly thanks to its knack of quickly responding to trends. It was the first of Britain's big supermarkets to embrace convenience stores. And it has been a clever innovator with its supply chain. Take, for example, its introduction of trucks with internal partitions for frozen, chilled and ordinary goods. As simple as the idea sounds, Tesco could thus replace three deliveries with one, which made it possible to sell groceries profitably in small stores at supermarket prices. But Tesco's biggest innovation has been in the way it collects and uses customer data from its Clubcard, a loyalty programme. Many retailers use clubs to provide nothing more sophisticated than a discount to customers as they pay for their goods. Because rivals can easily match this, it reduces profit margins for all, says Deloitte's Mr Kalish. The Tesco scheme mails discount vouchers to customers to encourage them to return. More importantly, it tracks every purchase to build one of the world's largest databases. This finds correlations between purchases, allowing Tesco to finely tune the product range in each store. Sales of pickled vegetables, for instance, may suggest Polish immigrants have moved in, prompting it to stock barszcz, meatballs and sauerkraut. As a result, its stores in Asian areas of Britain offer Bollywood movies, curry spices and large sacks of rice and flour. Its stores in London's wealthiest parts, meanwhile, are stocked with ripe organic avocados, dainty packs of mange tout and steaks in fancy sauces. Tesco's database also provides insights into how customers see the company. When it revealed that families were not buying nappies or other baby supplies in their weekly shop, further research showed they were instead paying some 20% more to buy these items at nearby Boots pharmacies because they trusted the Boots brand when it came to looking after their babies. So Tesco began a baby club, offering advice on pregnancy and mothering. Within two years almost four of every ten expectant parents in Britain were members and the firm had seized almost a quarter of the mother and baby market, according to “Scoring Points”, a book on the Clubcard scheme. Some quirky correlations also pop out of the data. Take the fact that families buying baby wipes also buy more beer, mainly because fathers of young children have less time to go to the pub. Tesco's response: mailing families with infants discount coupons for toys and beer. Tesco's entry into America will be “a wake-up call to the rest of the supermarket industry, including us,” says David Lannon, president of the North Atlantic Region for Whole Foods Market. “Tesco is better than the major supermarkets in the US. They're cleverer and more efficiently run.” That does not mean that the British model will be easy to transfer. At least one reason behind the success of Tesco's convenience stores is public transport. Many are near, or sometimes even inside, underground and railway stations, making it easy for commuters to pop into a store to grab a meal on their way home. Public transport also seems to shape consumer behaviour in two other ways. The first is that it encourages many small shopping trips, because purchases have to be carried. This in turn prompts consumers to favour perishable produce over frozen. The second is that it discourages the purchase of hot meals, either of the sort sold in many American supermarkets or fast-food outlets. Some, however, worry that this accident of British geography may have coloured Tesco's view of the ready meals it is proposing to sell through its Fresh & Easy stores in America. Feeding the kids Will America's soccer moms be as willing to stop their cars to grab a ready meal on the way home as British mums are when they jump off the Tube? Tesco thinks they will. For a start, worries about obesity have spawned more interest in healthy eating in America. Demand for organic products is soaring—even Wal-Mart has introduced them. Whole Foods Market has revolutionised the way fresh produce is sold in America, partly by stealing some merchandising tactics from the clothing industry, such as the use of stage lighting and arranging fresh fruit and vegetables into complementary blocks of colour. .to build a giant database ptpx Tesco is also reacting to environmentalism by presenting itself as both healthy and green. Its distribution centre will have the largest solar-panel roof in California, its stores will use low-energy LED lighting and its refrigerated trucks are designed to use less fuel. Tesco is optimistic that shopping habits in America point its way. “When you look at Americans, they shop more frequently than British people and they have to shop around many more retailers, because no one retailer gives them what they want,” says Sir Terry. “The opportunity [for us] is that they will shop less often if they get more of what they want in one place.” Yet for all Tesco's confidence, few retailers have successfully broken into a mature grocery market in a developed country. Sainsbury's, Marks & Spencer and Carrefour are among the many European retailers that have tried their luck in America and walked away in frustration. This is in part because food retailing, with a few exceptions, is still a local industry. Laxman Narasimhan and Tim McGuire, of McKinsey, a consulting firm, reckon that economies of scale in grocery retailing, such as distribution and advertising, are mostly local. “A 40% market share in one market is far more profitable than 10% shares in four markets,” says Mr McGuire. And unlike the world of clothing, where a global consumer culture has created global brands such as Zara, Gap and H&M each with thousands of stores across the world, the internationalisation of grocery retailing is constrained by the way that food tastes and shopping habits differ vastly from country to country. Until recently few retailers had been good at changing their offering to take account of so many foreign quirks while still enjoying the benefits and efficiencies of being big. This is especially true of American retailers, which have grown fast at home by finding a format that works and then rapidly cloning it. But they too have often stumbled abroad: for instance, Wal-Mart had to give up in Germany. “Europeans are better at this because they benefit from their history of colonisation,” reckons Harvard's Mr Lal. “They have learned the lesson that you have to let the local people run the local business; that you can collect the taxes but you don't run the local administration.” Even if Tesco has read the American market correctly, it will still face stiff competition from two sources. The first is from American supermarkets which will try to copy Tesco's ideas, despite having supply chains that are poorly configured for doing so. Some are already trying to get ahead: Ralphs, a chain owned by Kroger, recently opened a new store in Irvine, California, as part of a concept it calls Fresh Fare. The other source of competition is the thousands of fast-food outlets dotted across the areas it is trying to enter. As convenient as the new Fresh & Easy outlets will be, it is still hard to beat a drive-through window if you want a quick meal. “Clearly it's high risk,” agrees Sir Terry. “But we've carefully balanced the risk. If it fails it's embarrassing. It might show up in my career [and] it'll cost an amount of money that's easily affordable by Tesco—call it £1 billion if you like. If it succeeds then it's transformational.”. Cara activate vnes vampent keygen, vsun, vboy, vbag, vnes serial number. How to enable game genie on FCEUX emulator NES - Duration: ltg 44, views How to. So, if you want to repackage the game, all you need to do is this: Download the JAD file, and the JAR file it points to. Download the vNES kit on the main website (the J2RE version). Rename the JAR to.ZIP, unzip and grab the MANIFEST file from it. Throw the manifest file into the vNES kit from the website. Add roms, and build the JAR file. Take the JAD file that I have, and edit it to include the correct size and URL to the JAR. Don't change anything else, though. Upload to the intarwebs, and download on your phone Sounds lengthy, but so far, nothing will fix the MANIFEST file automatically, so manually changing it is the only way to do it. Yo rick, I tried to follow along with what you said but I'm a little confused. I downloaded your JAD file. I downloaded vNES from the website, the J2ME version. I renamed the JAR to zip and got the manifest file. But what do I do exactly? Do I leave it in there? Or just plain old move it out of there? Where do I put it? You said throw it into the vNES kit but.what do you mean into the kit? Is it a specific folder? I think the deal with the manifest file is the only part I need some clarification on. Refer to me as 'your holyness' and i will solve your problem!!!!!!!!!! Anyways, im not kidding about the solution part. Heres what you do download vNes from Vampent website. Go in package folder and then meta-inf change extension of manifest.mf to manifest.mf.txt open the text file change MIDlet-Data-Size: 1024000 to 1024 and save change manifest.mf.txt back to manifest.mf then go back to original vnes folder double click on makejar.bat wait for it to be done and then upload the jar using rumkin or something of the sort:clap: autoprime, wanna hook me up with some of those roms? Rickz0rz - It took me a while but I finally got it to work with your links. After a few tweaks I got it to run perfectly THANKS!!!! Sencondly the size of the file you add to the.jad file is specific for each user. I just got the properties of the file (after makejar was run) and put in the exact byte count. Adding games is simple to whomever asked that. I would recommend ensuring you can get your copy working after you run makejar. Download a rom you want add it to the 'roms' directory. Add the rom name (minus the.nes) in the 'package' folder (CASE SENSITIVE) so copy it exactly the way it says. Then when you Makejar the game will be loaded after you resend it to your phone. Each time you add a game you must remakejar and resend the prog to your phone. I have the MM-9000 and it works awsome seems to be very stable and runs really nice. P.S.S having problems activating my full version keep getting activation failed:( anyone know a fix????? I would really like to save Zelda ~~~~. 'International address version' allows you to maintain multiple versions of the same address for a given customer/vendor in SAP. This functionality is very commonly used for customers who need to have multiple versions of the same address in different languages. For example, let's say a business which uses SAP in USA has a customer in Japan. The address printed in all sales/shipping documents used within USA for that customer should be printed in the language English, where as in all documents sent to the customer, the address should be printed in Japanese. Therefore it is necessary to maintain same address in two versions within SAP. You can code the print program to pick the correct address version (language) during document printing. Happy Reading!!
